Field Notes

the garden, the woods, and whatever else turns up

Hello! This is my little nature notebook. Mostly leaves and birds at the moment. Thanks for stopping by.

Why leaves change color (and why I keep picking them up)

Every autumn I tell myself I don't need another leaf in a book. Then I find a really good yellow one and bring it home anyway.

The green fades as the chlorophyll breaks down, which lets the yellow and orange show through. Some leaves make red pigments too. That's the short version. Mostly I just like how the same bit of woods looks different every few days.

If you're saving leaves, put them between scrap paper first. Straight into a favourite book is a mistake you only need to make once.

A seed swap / little fundraiser?

I've been thinking about a table where people could swap spare seeds and plant pots. There always seem to be more pots than plants by the end of the summer.

The fundraiser part would be for a few pairs of work gloves and rubbish bags for a local litter pick. Nothing grand. Just enough supplies to get a few people out for a morning.

  • Spare seeds in labelled envelopes
  • Clean pots that can be used again
  • Maybe a small plant table, if enough cuttings survive

Still only an idea. No date or venue yet, and no donations are being collected here. I'll put an update on this page if it goes ahead.

Leaving the seed heads alone

The garden looks a bit untidy now. I was going to cut everything back, but the dry stems are quite nice in the early light, so some of them are staying.

There are still seeds in a few of the flower heads. I'll leave those for the birds and deal with the rest another day. An excellent excuse to put off a job.

A walk after the rain

The best part was the smell of the pine needles. The worst part was finding out, again, that those shoes are not waterproof.

A reminder for next time: bring a bag for any litter, take a photo before trying to identify a mushroom, and don't stand in the middle of the path looking at your phone.

That's all for this one. More when I have something to write down.
